The University of Poli Marche

The brand-new Medicine and Surgery course, named Medicine and Technology (M&T) in Ancona, started in 2022. Therefore, only one academic year is active so far.

In the 2022/2023 academic year, this course holds a total of 60 places, divided as follows:

• 35 for EU citizens and non-EU ones living in Italy;
• 25 for non-EU citizens resident abroad.

Please be advised that this number might change in the following years.

Position

During the first three years, the first semester will be mainly carried out by the Engineering Faculty at the Polo ‘Alfredo Trifogli’ Monte Dago . It can easily be reached by bus 1/4 (or 1/3 at night, or 1/5 under the holidays) that passes extremely often until late at night. You can get off at the Tavernelle stop and then walk for a few minutes; otherwise, there are also shuttle buses to enhance the connection between Ancona train stations and the University.

The second semester, mainly dedicated to clinical training, will be conducted at the Faculty of Medicine in one of the two “ Torrette” buildings named Polo “B. Eustachio.” There are many ways to reach this University, directly or indirectly, by bus, train, or car.

Bus: direct routes

• 30: connects Ancona’s central train station to the hospital. It passes through the station every half hour, at the 9th or 39th minute of every hour, so you need to be on time to be sure not to miss it. On the other hand, for those coming from the center or from the station itself, it is the only one that allows you both to travel via Flaminia, a long, sidewalk-less freeway between the two train stations and to save yourself the pedestrian route from Torrette station to the hospital. From Umberto I, it leaves every half hour, at the 20th or 50th minute of every hour, but only until 1:50 pm. After that, it will go only once every hour starting at 3 p.m., condemning those who do not know the schedule to very long waits.
• 30/Medicina: The new route is available only on weekdays, which, however, leaves from the station without going through Piazza Ugo Bassi at the 30th minute of every hour until 1:30 pm and then at the 25th minute from 2:25 pm until 7:25 pm. From the hospital, on the other hand, leaves every hour at the 45th minute.
• 31: Connects the infamous Ugo Bassi Square to the hospital. It passes through the hinterland (particularly Posatora), taking quite a long time if one also considers the numerous intermediate stops.
• 35: a bus of dubious usefulness for students with a good working pair of legs. It connects the Torrette train station to the hospital and prevents those who use it from taking a healthy walk; the best way to use it is if you’re late!
• I (Ancona – Polverigi): the only intercity route that has a stop close to the hospital, you only have to cross a lousy road complete with eternally red traffic lights. It leaves Piazza Cavour and passes through the central station to Umberto I.

Bus: indirect routes

• 1/4 : it connects Piazza IV Novembre, where the Passetto monument is, with the Tavernelle area, near the faculties of Engineering, Biological Sciences and Agriculture (Monte Dago) and with the central station. Here, one must get off to change to the 30 or a suburban (see next point) because, unfortunately, it does not stop at Torrette.
• A, B, C, J, L: although these are intercity buses, you can also take them with a city route pass as long as you stay in the city. All these connect Piazza Cavour with the Torrette train station via the central station, passing often enough to provide a viable alternative to the exclusive 30. From Torrette station, one can resort to the 35 or opt for the pedestrian route.

Students can also download the “Moovit” app, which calculates the best route with the different buses by finding personalized schedules, rides, and alerts. You can also get your bus pass through the ATMA app or go to an information desk of Conerobus Spa – a so-called Coneropoint – equipped with a copy of the tax code, your student ID number, or receipt of payment of the first installment of enrollment for the current academic year and a completed substitute statement form.

Train

The only two stops are:

• The central station , from which you can take the 30 (direct route), buses A, B, C, J, and L (indirect routes), or, if you have cash, a cab;
• The Torrette station , from which you either walk or get on the 35.

Lastly, if you prefer driving, you will need some patience to find parking. The faculty has a nice parking lot, which is also quite large, but be aware that if you arrive after 8:30 a.m., which is the start time of classes, you will never find a place.

The space dedicated adequately to car parking is located right attached to the faculty. It can be accessed after applying at the secretary’s office via the badge you will be given once you have enrolled. As anticipated, unfortunately, spaces run out quickly; however, by just lurking and waiting for some professor to access the spaces inside the parking lot dedicated to them, you can follow them at full throttle and “poof,” you’re done!

In case even this barely legal option fails, there are free parking spaces outside the faculty as well:

• Parking lots in front of buildings that do not charge a fee (these fill up even faster than the aforementioned dedicated spaces, however);
• A relatively large parking lot 5 minutes walk from the faculty at via Metauro 41, also free of charge; in detail, you will find them on your left coming from the freeway in the direction of Torrette;
• Supermarket and McDonald’s parking lot in via Conca.

In short, somehow, you will manage to park; do not be discouraged! However, do not park along the street in front of the parking lots or on the hill that gives you access to the faculty parking lots, as they often give tickets.

From the fourth year, the course will occur within the Faculty of Medicine to facilitate hospital attendance, a central part of the training program. Clerkships will be held mainly in the regional hospital, “ Ospedali Riuniti Torrette Di Ancona ,” just a few steps from Polo Eustachio.

Suppose you’re looking for accommodations in Ancona, we would recommend looking either around Torrette (so in the hospital area), even if it’s distant from the central city and there are only supermarkets around. Alternatively, many students prefer renting an apartment in the city center, which is close to many buses and is full of life, or close to the Engineering faculty.

Study plan

The study plan is organized differently from other medical courses. The first three years will be aimed at fostering the integration between the Medical and Bioengineering disciplines: the first semester will be more focused on Engineering subjects, while the second one will be on introductory medical topics (biology, anatomy, or genetics, for example).

The last three years, on the other hand, will be mainly dedicated to professionalizing activities. They will focus more on clinical practice, mainly using the integrated approaches learned during the first three years.

However, there is a significant innovation: in addition to the traditional course of study, the Medicine & Technology course provides 30 optional credits (corresponding to 4 exams) over the 360 credits required to graduate in Medicine and Surgery.

This will allow students to request, at the end of their university career, the release of a second degree in Biomedical Engineering in addition to the one obtained in Medicine and Surgery. This will allow M&T graduates to become doctors with extraordinary abilities to handle new technologies and define patient-tailored therapies with their Ph.D. studies, obtain a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering, perform biomedical research, or work in the industrial field.

These are only some of the M&T offers: professionalizing activities (PAs), elective didactic activities, and language courses.

PAs , also called enabling internships, spam a total of 60 credits over six years and are carried out in the scientific structures of Poli Marche, in different hospitals of the region, the most popular being “Ospedali Riuniti di Ancona,” but also in public and private companies in the biomedical sector.

Elective didactic activities (9 credits) comprise monographic courses and forums for students to choose freely. This will allow the study of supplementary topics (medical and engineering) and the acquisition of knowledge and skills valuable for both the working environment and the post-graduate training (residency schools, research doctorates, and masters).

Moreover, these didactic activities can be integrated with stage and internships abroad and voluntary attendance in clinical and research fields. In addition to the teaching activity, the training course provides tutorial support for the student or small groups of students to promote communication skills, critical reading and reflection, discussion and public speaking, teamwork, and facilitate innovation.

For international students, the Italian language course provided by the university is highly suggested since mastering the language will be crucial to communicating with doctors and patients during clerkships.

Attendance is mandatory at 70% for lectures and 100% for PAs. It’s strictly controlled: students must sign an attendance sheet at the beginning of each lesson.

The first year

Lectures for the first year start during the last few weeks of October. Some professors are often the same as those from the Italian Medicine degree, while others are specific for the M&T due to their previous experiences abroad. Regardless, they are Italians teaching in English. In the first year, you will have five exams , only one of which is annual.

First semester

• Fundamentals of Experimental Physics and Chemistry (12 CFU) : Chemistry and Physics are divided into two main topics. The exam consists of 12 multiple-choice questions (six for Chemistry and six for Physics), two exercises, and two open questions (one for each topic). Afterward, there is also an oral examination, which can help you improve your grade.
• Mathematical Analysis and Geometry (12 CFU) : It includes analysis 1, hints of analysis 2, and geometry, similar to linear algebra. The written exam is divided into two days; you will take the geometry part on the first, and analysis on the second.

Second semester

• Human Anatomy I (7 CFU) : One of the first medicine-only exams you must handle. It consists of an oral examination, but you can only sit for it after overcoming the Cell Morphology and Function exam.
• Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Human Physiology I (9 CFU) : A written and oral exam divided into single subjects. You can only take it after passing Human Anatomy I.
• Cell Morphology and Function (12 CFU) : The first annual exam you will encounter in your career. In the first semester, you will focus on Biology, Genetics, and a part of Histology and Embryology; in the second one, instead, you will study the remaining part of Histology and Human Anatomy, which is microscopic anatomy and deals with slide examinations at the microscope. The exam is mainly oral and will deal with each topic.

As mentioned, Professionalizing Activities and Monographic Courses start right from the first year.

Regarding monographic courses, you can choose between “ Foundations of the Scientific Method ” and “ Biotechnologies Applied to Pharmacology ” for Medicine or “ Introduction to Biomedical Engineering ” for Bioengineering. They are 1 CFU each and, so far, are dispensed through an online learning platform.

On the other hand, first-year PAs are mandatory, and their total value is 2 CFUs. During the second semester, you will have three PAs:

• Histology Lab , aimed at recognizing tissues. The exam needs to be taken in April and consists of tissue recognition at a microscope slide examination.
• Applied genetics, divided into Human Cytogenetics and Genetics of Tumors, are mainly frontal lessons. The first part focuses on the human karyotype, chromosomal anomalies, genomic imprinting, and uniparental disomy pathology; the second one, on the other hand, deals with the diagnosis and prevention of hereditary diseases and gene therapy.
• Biochemistry of macromolecules and application : The biochemistry part will mainly focus on different populations’ nutrition and nutritional needs by learning to fill out nutrition journals. The application part will focus on molecular biology techniques such as PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, and real-time PCR.

There will be a written exam for all these activities: the final grade is the average of the three single ones.

The schedule can vary: in the first semester, lectures were usually in the morning, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the possibility of following lessons online to facilitate international students moving to Ancona.

In the second semester, on the other hand, it’s much more common to have full days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a lunch break from 1 to 2 p.m. For more information, the timetable is available here .

Pros and Cons of Medicine and Technology

Pros

• You get two degrees , one in Biomedical Engineering and one in Medicine and Surgery. After graduation, you can register for the Postgraduate test in Italy for a Medicine Degree or a master’s in Biomedical Engineering.
• The English degree is equivalent to the Italian one ; they are equally recognized in Italy and the EU. For non-EU countries, it is necessary to check individual regulations.
• There are two extraordinary exam sessions besides the winter and summer ones: in April (this year from the 9th to the 22nd) and one week in May, where all classes are suspended. This is particularly useful for students enrolling towards the end of the first semester to catch up with the exams they couldn’t sit for.
• Professors are young and readily available to answer questions or doubts, promoting dialogue with the students.
• Canteens are very close to both universities and have great and varied food.
• The universities are well connected to the city center
• Poli Marche also offers free language courses in Italian (for international students), French, and Spanish.
• Being such a new course, there is a high level of communication between students and the higher-ups, namely professors, the secretary’s office, and the head of the program. This means that students get a say in some decisions and that their opinions matter.
• Classes are relatively small – much smaller than Italian ones, enabling you to follow lessons and know your peers better.

Cons

• Since it’s far from the economics and engineering faculties, the medical campus is quite isolated, so there is not much to do if you have some free time, except going to the library.
• Being such a new course, this inevitably means that you’re starting everything from scratch. There are no past papers or past questions to revise from, and neither “sbobine” is present (notes taken from a lesson recording, crucial for studying medicine in Italian universities).
• Despite being highly qualified and helpful, professors are still Italian. Consequently, their pronunciation is not always perfect, and their English is not that British.

Lunch and Libraries

There are many different options for students to eat at the Faculty of Medicine:

• Inside the faculty itself, Faculty Bar is equipped with breakfast, snacks, and lunch at highly reasonable prices.
• Hospital Bar , inside the hospital, is very easy to reach from the university; certainly an alternative to the faculty bar, but with higher prices and better quality.
• University Canteen , located via Conca 45, right by the university, is open only for lunch and, in addition to it, you can get takeout dinner, it can be very convenient for students who don’t feel like going out to other cafeterias at night. The price is fixed but varies between 3.00 € and 5.50 €, according to what you’re taking. To access the cafeteria, the card must be issued free of charge by ERDIS (Regional Right to Study for Marche).
• McDonald’s : for a hypercholesterolemic lunch or evening, the famous fast food chain is less than 5 minutes from the university and less from the cafeteria. It’s not the healthiest alternative for sure, but every once in a while, it’s a good choice.
• Supermarkets : Some people pass in front of the two supermarkets where Torrette is stocked and buy a sandwich made at the counter. It’s an excellent cheap, as well as culinary, choice for eating well.
• Pizzerias and Bars : a few places around the university are under-appreciated for the potential they could have. Some of these also do takeout and delivery services.

There is also a University canteen at the Engineering Faculty with the same prices and regulations as the one in Medicine; in both canteens, you will also find microwaves that you can use to heat your packed lunch. Moreover, right inside the city, there are many shops, restaurants, and cafés around where you can have lunch on the go.

Poli Marche also offers excellent places to study quietly or with others. In the building ‘Alfredo Trifogli’ Monte Dago, you can find the Technical-Scientific-Biomedical Library , which is open from Monday to Friday from 8.30 a.m. to 7.15 p.pm. and on Saturday from 8.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On the other hand, the Medicine campus offers many places to study of varying sizes to suit the tastes of all their students. They can be found in Polo Eustachio or in the building right in front that hosts the Italian Medicine and Surgery course, Polo Murri.

Polo Eustachio

• There are common study tables on the ground floor, along the main corridor, in the two spaces around the stairs. They are hectic places, thoroughfares for many students and hospital staff; they are also very close to exit doors and, in winter, can be a rather cold place. One of these two spaces is very close to the faculty cafeteria, so it is a wild place during meals.
• There is also the so-called “anatomic table,” a study room with some bones and other anatomical structures inside, which can be helpful in anatomy. There is also the anatomy lab, with a screen in the middle where students can interactively see all the different anatomical structures.

Also on the ground floor, across the main corridor, are two study rooms (it’s worth noting the fact that, during graduation sessions, these can be occupied for celebrations):

• The larger one (called “Noisy” ) holds to its nickname: there are large tables generally used for collaborative study. It is a relatively bright place thanks to large windows overlooking a small inner courtyard and, on the other side, some of the parking lots.
• The smaller (called “Silent” ) would be in continuity with the Noisy, were it not for a glass wall that separates and quiets the chatter from the other room. It, too, has a few tables juxtaposed against the side walls.

Polo Murri

• On the second and ground floor, large tables are spread out in the free spaces where you can study together, even with the constant buzz of passersby and the thousands of students coming out of nearby classrooms after classes.
• Buffets are held at the end of conferences, especially on the upper floor, so these spaces may occasionally be unavailable or even noisier.
• In the basement is a large atrium (affectionately called Bunker by students) where tables are arranged; there is some buzz here, but it is a more “secluded” place to study in peace.

Moreover, there is also a library, accessed from the ground floor, and has two floors. It appears to be a tranquil and bright place due to the large windows overlooking the main corridor, where the entrance to the library is located. About 5 or 6 large tables are on the ground floor, so you must come in early to sit. Upstairs the tables are much more numerous, and it is easier to find seating. The library is trendy, so many people study here right after lessons. Of course, you can access the library book lending service by showing your ID card and signing documents.

Then, on the first floor, a computer room is set up where many people go to study. There are tables here, but you can use computers connected to the printer. Each student, at the moment, has a maximum number of copies they can use free of charge each year: the bill is brought by a program installed on all computers, from which you can log in with your “account.”

Studying abroad

The Faculty of Medicine does not provide too many destinations for the Erasmus+ study, preserving the exchange quality rather than the number of departures.

As in the other faculties, winning a scholarship to a country involves refunding a large part of the expenses, depending on the chosen destination. The grant awarded depends on the cost of living in that country and thus the bracket in which it is placed (it ranges from a minimum of 250 to 300 euros from the European Union, plus there are ministerial funds). Issues depend on your home university, destination university, and your condition.

Facebook groups of participating students are created each time the Erasmus+ call opens. By independently calculating your score and entering it into a common Excel sheet, it is possible to know who can win. This is useful for agreeing on the destinations involved and avoiding getting in each other’s way. Moreover, some foreign universities do not offer a curriculum compatible with some years, and comparing oneself with other participants right away saves everyone time. It also avoids competing for destinations that later cannot be attended.

Fellows who have gone before can give you the full syllabus of classes to attend. Lastly, please be advised that in many destinations, the minimum period required is nine months; it is essential to consider this, along with the risk of falling behind to devote oneself to an experience that is undoubtedly among the best in a student’s life.

Alternatively, students can apply for the Erasmus+ traineeship, a scholarship that supports them in an internship they choose to do abroad, usually for a shorter period. You are always expected to apply for the call; if you are awarded the fellowship (on merit), you have to contact the head doctors and departments of the hospitals where you would like to attend. Once you are accepted, you will be informed about the general conditions and what you will need to access the facility, along with the relevant paperwork that needs to be done.

The pros of this experience are certainly a more excellent choice, contingent only on acceptance by the departments themselves and direct involvement in the practical aspects of medical life and the country’s health care system.

The cons, however, stem mainly from the need to do everything alone and the fact that no number of credits is recognized in this experience.

Outside of the University, another option is the SCOPE EXCHANGE offered by SISM (Segretariato Italiano Studenti di Medicina). It is a non-profit student association in Italy that organizes activities that enrich your university curriculum and path. The Scope Exchange is a month-long exchange in one country (also non-European, depending on the destinations chosen from year to year).

Scoring is based on “grade point average” merit and the grade awarded by a native-speaker teacher who gives the oral exam (in Ancona, only English-speaking destinations) to pairs of participants.

Enrollment

1. LOGIN to the University’s Esse3web portal univpm esse3web .

• Candidates who have taken the admission test at this University will log in using the credentials issued when registering for the competition.
• Candidates who have taken the test at other universities must first register on the Esse3web portal as new users and obtain login credentials.
• “Booked” candidates who intend to enroll at this University after registering on the Esse3web portal must send an email request to concorsimed@univpm.it to activate the online enrollment procedure.

1. FILL OUT the enrollment application online by clicking the item “Secretariat” > Enrollment”;
2. PRINT and SIGN the enrollment application;
3. PAY the first installment of fees through PagoPA or with the MAV created by the online procedure by the due date indicated on the bulletin itself;
4. UPLOAD the following mandatory documents in the online enrollment procedure on the Esse3web portal by the deadline set by the Ministry/Cineca at each sliding scanned separately in .pdf file format:

• Enrolment application (both pages) hand-signed by the candidate along with the copy of a valid ID document (in ONE file);
• Copy of the payment receipt for the first installment of the tuition fees amounting to €156,00 carried out via PAGO PA.
• Copy of the fiscal code (codice fiscale) if in your possession;
• Self-Declaration for simultaneous enrolment ;
• Copy of the residence permit/entry VISA or receipt of the relative request for candidates from non-EU countries residing in Italy / or residing abroad.

After you have completed the procedure described above, you will receive, in your e-mail, the confirmation of successful enrollment with the assignment of your student ID number.

Next, you will have to report to the Student Secretariat of the Faculty of Medicine – Via Tronto 10 Torrette di Ancona – on the days indicated on the Medicine and Surgery Registrar’s Office homepage to:

• Pick up the badge;
• Apply, if of interest, for the Faculty of Medicine parking permit.
• Towards January, you’ll also need to pick up the PA booklet and the ID card to attach to your white coat.

Transferring

Beginning on a date to be defined through the University’s website and imperatively by the deadline date set by the Ministry/Cineca, at each sliding date, successful candidates who are already enrolled in the course of study at Università Poli Marche must:

• Submit a waiver as described below and matriculate as described above OR
• Make an application for transfer according to the following MANDATORY steps:

1. PROVIDE, if not already done, the payment of the contribution provided for the first installment of tuition fees of € 156.00 by downloading the online Mav bulletin present in the reserved area and SEND the receipt of the payment to the Student Secretariat Office of the course of study of origin;
2. LOG ON to the University’s Esse3web portal and complete the online transfer procedure by clicking the “Career” item;
3. PRINT AND SIGN the transfer application, affix the revenue stamp (16 euros), and submit it to your home course’s Student Registrar’s Office;
4. ENTER the Reserved Area and UPLOAD a passport photo format Jpeg or Bmp resolution of 200dpi and max 400kb to be used for the badge by following the path “Personal Data – Photo”;
5. SUBMIT the following documents by the deadline set by the Ministry/Cineca at each sliding date at the counter of the Study Courses Office of the Faculty of Medicine:

• Copy of the transfer receipt issued by the home secretary of the course of study;
• Receipt of payment of the 1st installment of fees of € 156.00 made by MAV or by Pago PA;
• Copy of valid identity document;
• Copy of your fiscal code (codice fiscale in Italian).

Then, you will have to report to the Student Secretary’s office of the Faculty of Medicine to pick up your badge and apply, if of interest, for a Faculty of Medicine parking permit.

After the transfer, it is possible to submit the ONLINE application for the recognition of credits and exams from previous academic careers.

Scholarships

Unfortunately, there aren’t many scholarships offered by the University, mainly the one from ERDIS , the regional agency dealing with the right to study in Marche, and a couple for international students. However, you can apply for a tuition fee exemption if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

• Your ISEE-Indicator for University studies amounts to or is lower than € 25.000,00;
• You graduated from high school with distinction and a final grade of 100;
• You graduated with distinction and a final grade of 110;
• You are benefiting from or are eligible for the ERDIS scholarship;
• You are benefiting from a Scholarship from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
• You have been granted international protection;
• You have a disability assessed to be equal to or higher than 66%.

Accommodations
