So, What Does This Ranking Show?
You probably already know that the IMAT 2025 rankings have been released, but here’s everything you might not know: shall we go through the numbers together and draw some conclusions?
The entrance test for Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine in English — held on September 17, 2025 — saw the participation of 13,495 candidates . This marks a historic record , confirming an upward trend in recent years, with a sharp increase compared to 10,931 candidates in 2024 .
Is this due to an escape from the new “Filter Semester” system? Probably yes — but let’s stay on topic.
On October 13 , the first national ranking was published on the Universitaly portal: from there, the allocation process and the first rounds of offers began. Pure adrenaline.
Let’s go quickly. The highest score recorded was 87 points , achieved by a foreign candidate applying for a seat in Milan . Some might jokingly say that “foreigners come to steal our IMAT.”
Among the most significant figures:
This year, the number of eligible candidates has increased significantly: 7,202 students scored above the 20-point threshold , compared to 5,609 in 2024 and 3,467 in 2023 . Some say the test has become easier than in the past — but we prefer to credit the dedication and effort of young students .
In any case, the number of available seats has also grown, rising from 960 to 1,049 ( +9.2% ), distributed as follows:
However, this increase alone isn’t enough to offset the sharp growth in the number of participants.
The average score has remained relatively stable compared to last year ( 42.09 vs. 44.9 in 2024 ). The sharp increase in eligible candidates? That makes the competition tighter among the top score brackets .
With the Filter Semester system now well established, we can expect low dropout rates , leading to slow but steady ranking movements , especially for Medicine and Dentistry .
As for Veterinary Medicine , 2025 marks a special case — it’s the first year the program has been included in the IMAT ranking, so it will take more time to understand its specific trends and dynamics.
To understand how likely you are to get into your desired university, compare your ranking position with the last admitted position from the first round of allocations. Here’s how to interpret it:
In some cases ( like Messina, Cagliari, or Siena Dentistry ), the ranking shifts may exceed 300 positions , but much will depend on withdrawals and the order of preferences indicated by the candidates.
Based on the data collected, we estimate the following:
It’s realistic to expect the ranking process to continue until all seats are filled , with a timeframe extending into spring–summer 2026 .
In general, it makes sense to remain on the waiting list at least until March or April — after that, the decision becomes more personal and strategic .
As every year, our Ranking Help Desk is open for individual analyses . The service is reserved for candidates up to position 1650 , with a limited number of requests to ensure accurate and timely responses.
The help desk opens once a week , coinciding with the ranking updates for Medicine and Dentistry in Italian . Requests are handled exclusively through the official Testbusters form — not via email or social media.
Where to find it? Right here: just fill out the official form .
More seats, more eligible candidates — but also more competition . The 2025 IMAT confirms the trend of a test that’s increasingly popular and stable in average scores .
Those who rank within the top 1,500 positions are still fully in the game : the key is to closely follow the updates and plan your next moves carefully .
As always, we’ll keep monitoring each ranking update and publish new analyses to help you interpret your position — step by step.
