Studying Medicine in English at the University of Florence: A Guide to the New Program

Florence has finally joined the English-taught medicine club. From the 2026/2027 academic year, the University of Florence will offer a new six-year single-cycle degree in Medicine and Surgery, taught entirely in English. It’s also the first degree of its kind to be activated in Tuscany. The University itself is anything but new: its history reaches back to the Studium Generale founded in 1321. The English medical programme, however, is brand new. Apparently Florence waited seven centuries to decide that anatomy also sounds good in English. Better late than never. The programme is 6 years long, awards 360 CFU and has nationally restricted admission, with only 50 places currently listed. Entry is through the IMAT, rather than the open-semester system used for Italian-taught Medicine. Because this is the first intake, there are no previous IMAT admission cut-off scores to use as a reference, senior students to ask for advice, or inherited folders titled “the professor always asks these questions”. Still, there’s no reason to panic as students will receive the necessary guidance and support.
